Extra Money for Residents in Certain States This May

As of May 2025, while nationwide stimulus payments have ended, some U.S. states offer their own financial assistance programs for residents facing money challenges.

Here’s an updated overview of key state programs available this month:

California: Sacramento Family First Economic Support Pilot (FFESP)

  • Provides $725 monthly for 12 months to families with children aged 0 to 5 years.
  • Eligibility requires living in specific Sacramento County ZIP codes (95815, 95821, 95823, 95825, 95828, 95838), household income below 200% of the federal poverty line, and not participating in other guaranteed income programs.
  • The program is limited to Sacramento County and does not include Fresno, San Bernardino, or Los Angeles.
  • Designed to help low-income families with young children manage high living costs.

Colorado: TABOR Refund

  • Colorado residents who file a 2024 state income tax return and opt in can receive a TABOR refund in 2025.
  • Refund amounts vary by income: for example, singles with income up to $53,000 get $177, and joint filers up to $354; higher incomes receive larger refunds up to $565 (single) or $1,130 (joint).
  • The refund is distributed automatically from March to June after filing, but taxpayers must check the TABOR box on their tax return to receive it.
  • Note: Last year’s refunds were higher (up to $800 single, $1,600 joint), but 2025 refunds are lower due to legislative changes directing funds to other programs.

Alaska: Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD)

  • The PFD distributes oil revenue-based payments annually to eligible Alaska residents.
  • In 2024, the payment was $1,702, including a special energy relief bonus; the 2025 amount is expected to be similar but not yet finalized, with proposals ranging from $1,400 to $3,900.
  • Eligibility requires residency throughout 2024, physical presence in Alaska for at least 72 consecutive hours in 2023 or 2024, and no absence exceeding 180 days unless for approved reasons.
  • Applications must be submitted by March 31, 2025; payments are made by direct deposit or check.

Pennsylvania: Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program

  • Offers rebates up to $1,000 for property taxes or rent paid in 2024.
  • Available to seniors 65+, widows/widowers 50+, and people 18+ with disabilities.
  • Household income limit is $46,520 or less annually (half of Social Security income excluded).
  • Applications are accepted online, by mail, or in person through June 30, 2025, with rebates starting in early July. The deadline may be extended if additional funds become available.
  • This program helps lower-income residents with housing costs.

If Your State Isn’t Listed

Many states have their own forms of financial assistance, including tax rebates, energy bill help, or local discounts. To explore options:

  1. Visit your state’s Department of Revenue website.
  2. Contact local social assistance offices.
  3. Review your state tax return for automatic refunds or credits.

Awareness of these programs can help eligible individuals receive financial support that might otherwise be missed.
